People never check where their imports are from

Sat Oct 25, 2008, 11:43 AM
Honestly. I mean I just saw a British fellow saying Mandarin ducks were from North America. They're from the Eastern part of Asia. I'm guessing that Europeans first found them in China, hence the common name Mandarin Ducks.

Same for the Muscovy Ducks. People here have no idea where they came from. Folks, they're from South America and they are one of the only domesticated ducks that are not related to mallards. My field biology teacher said something about them... like they were from Asia or something. They can't hybridize with mallards last I checked. The reason you get funky looking mallard hybrids is because just about every breed of duck from the Indian runner to the Rouen, from the Swedish blue to the Orpington. They come in lots of sizes and shapes.

I digress though. People don't know where their alien species come from and many don't know they are alien at all. I'm a bit disappointed that people never wonder about things or if they do, they never bother to find out about it.
The owner of the local Wild Birds Unlimited store had a contest to see if people knew the origin of the Muscovies that inhabit just about every part around here with a pond. She seemed surprised when I answered correctly and wondered why I knew it. I told her "I just was curious, so I looked it up."
Of course I suppose I'm just as bad, but in a different way. I don't bother to know all the history of my own home town. I'm sure there are history buffs and architect buffs that could tell you when this building or that was built.
I guess we can't all be smart about everything.

Maybe we all need to be a little more curious, though not about electrical outlets or power lines... or fan blade, heating elements, broken glass, venomous snakes, angry spiders.... =P

Hi Laura!
Yes, I shopped the woodpecker and nuthatch - they weren't cooperating.... in fact, none of them wanted to pose where I wanted them....so both of the birds in this piece were on our suet feeder and posing SO nicely, but I hated the look of the suet - I took it out. Thanks for the comment
Have a great DAy!!! Rob the Swash

Hi Laura!
Thanks for the wonderful comment on my Juvy Waxwing shot! I'd never noticed them myself, but they MUST have been around, the differences are subtle, unless you get a really close look.

Hi Laura!
Thanks for the great comments on Waiting His Turn and GO AWAY! The Grosbeaks show up more in northern states, but the southern states get lots of birds that we don't! (To my envy)

Hi Laura!
Ooops, I did not get a shot off of the recent lunar eclipse, I'm afraid I didn't know about it, until now. Darn, that would have been cool AND we actually had a string of decent days, too, some high clouds, but not all of the time. DARN! I need to mark up my calendar with important dates like that. Well, next time....Thanks for the note!
